Mexico will install 21 million smart meter installations in the next 10 years

REVIEW: On October 11, 2011, Northeast Group released the forecast report for the smart grid market in Mexico for the period 2011-2020. According to the report, the smart grid market in Mexico will total 8.3 billion U.S. dollars by 2020. In Latin America, Mexico’s potential in the smart grid is second only to Brazil.

The smart metering market has great development opportunities in Mexico. According to estimates, the number of smart meter installations in Mexico will reach 21 million in the next decade. In addition, during the forecast period, other segments of the smart grid, including distribution automation, wide-area measurement, and home energy management, will also develop rapidly.

The report points out that Mexico has been given the lead to develop into a smart grid market, both in Latin America and globally. Like other Latin American countries and emerging market countries, Mexico is also facing serious power theft and power failure, but these two phenomena are expected to be effectively improved through smart grid technology. Mexico is the only country that has benefited from the US market's spillover, including smart grid standards, US suppliers are looking for new markets, and smart grid technology know-how transfer.

The report also pointed out that Mexico will also benefit from its own single, state-owned power utility system, so that it can establish a systematic power grid regulatory framework and ensure effective deployment. Just as Enel successfully deployed smart meters in Italy, CFE (the only distribution utility in Mexico) can also ensure the rapid deployment of smart grids throughout Mexico.

In addition, in the smart grid market, worth 8.3 billion U.S. dollars by 2020, the smart meter market will contribute as much as US$5.1 billion. The smart meter market covers meter hardware, communications, IT, installation costs and professional services. In addition to the deployment of smart meters, Mexico will increase investment in distribution automation, wide-area measurement and home energy management in the next five years. By 2020, these three areas are expected to bring a total of 32 smart grids. Billion dollar market opportunities.
